Too Short Songs

I left the house this morning with Tobymac's "Boomin'"in my head, so when I got home I had to download it from Amazon's mp3 store (Which is great! You should try it! Click the banner at the top of the page! I get a cut!).

Now, when I get hooked on a new song, I'm the type who has to listen to it over and over and over again, and that's what I've been doing with "Boomin'." I'm doing it right now. Odds are that when you read this, I'll still be doing it. It's a good thing mp3's don't wear out.

Maybe everybody wants to press play one more on a good song, but I bet I'm a little more compulsive about it than others. I probably drove my college roommates to the brink of insanity more than once. Thanks for not smothering me in my sleep, guys!

Anyway, this compulsion is even more acute when the song is really short. It just leaves me wanting more every time I listen to it. My collection has more than a few songs that are really good, just way, way too short. So, to give me an excuse to listen to these songs again I thought I'd compile a little list of my favorites and throw it out there to see if anybody else has thoughts on too short songs.

Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix- 2:25 (-ish, depending on which version you have)
In my opinion, Jimi's greatest song and one of the greatest songs of the rock'n'roll era. Which makes it all the more painful when it ends after just a couple of minutes. A music critic once said that it's heartbreaking to think how much of this track probably got left on the cutting room floor. But the pain is diminished a little bit by Stevie Ray Vaughn's equally awesome seven minute instrumental cover.

Song 2 - Blur- 2:01
I have no idea what these guys are talking about. Why would you get your get your head checked by a jumbo jet? How would you even go about doing that? But never mind all that; this song makes me want to drive my car really fast... but only for two minutes at a time. Come to think of it, that's probably for the best.

Lump - The Presidents of the United States of America- 2:14
They play with 50% fewer strings than other rock groups, yet they still manage to rock extremely hard for very brief periods.

Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival- 2:19
Such a classic piece of old school, down home, straight ahead rock'n'roll that it makes me not mind that it's an anti-American protest song. If we'd had more stuff like this from the '60's generation I might not think they were such self-absorbed dingleberries today.

You Really Got Me - The Kinks- 2:13
The greatest riff in the history of power chords.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours) - Stevie Wonder- 2:38
This whole song seems like chorus. I'm sure Stevie could've squeezed a little more out of it than he did.

Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers- 2:06
And he has to stretch it with the "I know, I know, I know..." part to even get over two minutes. It seems a shame to have the string arrangement and everything for just two minutes.

This Woman's Work - Kate Bush- 3:35
Three minutes and thirty-five seconds is long for this list, but it still seems too short because the song is so good. It could've had two or three more verses and would've only been greater for the addition. An emotional epic crammed into just a few well-chosen phrases: "All the things we should've said that we never said, all the things we should've done that we never did..."
